Train Backbone Devices

IEC 61375 standard defines a hierarchical two-level architecture consisting of Consist Network and Train Backbone Network. The first one ensures data communication between onboard device; the second one is used for data communication between consists. In accordance with the standard, VDS Rail has developed the Train Backbone Routers and the Train Ethernet Repeaters in order to ensure interoperability between consists. VDS’s Train Backbone Routers perform both routing and switching tasks. Specific hardware by-pass and Active/Passive technology ensure proper redundancy between the backbone and the consist network, thus securing continuous operability. Train Topology Discovery Protocol (TTDP) defined by the IEC standard is used to achieve Train Inauguration procedures.

The IETBN is used when trains must be coupled together and has been specifically designed to meet IEC regulation requirements. IETBN is a Train Backbone Router implemented with an Ethernet Consist Switch providing connectivity for multiple consist devices. Thanks to the combination of backbone and consist ports, IETBN provides a compact, cost-sensitive solution. The device is equipped with double switches backbone lines protected by bypass relays for train backbone use and an optional bypass relay between two Fast Ethernet consist ports. Such architecture ensures more reliable consist topologies implementation.

IETBN is a Train Backbone Router implemented with an Ethernet Consist Switch providing connectivity for multiple consist devices. Thanks to the combination of backbone and consist ports, IETBN provides a compact, cost-sensitive solution. The device is equipped with double switches backbone lines protected by bypass relays for train backbone use and an optional bypass relay between two Gigabit Ethernet consist ports. Such architecture ensures more reliable consist topologies implementation.

The TBN is used when trains must be coupled together. Gigabit Train Backbone Node has been specifically designed to fulfil IEC regulation requirements. Double switched backbone lines protected by a bypass relay ensure high availability , even in case of power failure. In order to ensure uncompromising bandwidth availability, double Gigabit lines allow backbone connections up to 2 Gbps in aggregate mode. The device is eligible as high performance Backbone Node for multimedia data interoperability.

Train Ethernet Repeater regenerates the Ethernet frame data and the electrical parameters to overcome the 100 m standard imposed maximum Ethernet segment limit and can be installed between two ETBN when required by installation parameters.
